The Aspects of a Godly Father - Pastor Johnny Marten

Jun 21, 2026    Pastor Johnny Marten

In this Father's Day message, Pastor Johnny Marten teaches that godly fatherhood is not about perfection but about faithfully passing on faith to the next generation. Using Psalm 78:5 as the foundation, he highlights God's command that fathers teach their children about His works and His ways. Pastor Johnny begins by examining the life of Jacob, a deeply flawed man who started life as a deceiver and manipulator but was transformed after an encounter with God. Jacob's story demonstrates that a person's past failures do not determine their future. Just as God changed Jacob into Israel, God can transform fathers and families today. The message acknowledges that many people have experienced different kinds of fathers—absent fathers, addicted fathers, selfish fathers, controlling fathers, permissive fathers, and good fathers. While no father is perfect, every father has tremendous influence on his children, who often grow up wanting to imitate their dad for better or worse. Pastor Johnny then outlines several key aspects of a godly father: A godly father has a relationship with God the Father. Fathers cannot effectively lead their children spiritually unless they themselves are walking with God. A godly father breaks unhealthy generational patterns. Through God's help, fathers can stop destructive habits, attitudes, and strongholds from being passed on to future generations. A godly father turns his heart toward his children. Like the father in the story of the Prodigal Son, he remains loving, available, and ready to welcome his children even when they make mistakes. A godly father does not provoke his children. Instead, he lovingly disciplines, instructs, and trains them according to God's Word. A godly father models his faith. Children are more likely to follow God when they see authentic faith lived out at home rather than merely hearing rules and commands. The sermon concludes with a challenge for fathers and all believers to reflect on God's faithfulness in their own lives and intentionally share those stories with the next generation. By teaching, modeling, and living out a genuine relationship with God, fathers can help their children place their hope in Him and continue the legacy of faith.
